Synopsis : The works here by artist Jiawei Shen - commissioned to commemorate Malaysia's 51st year of Independence - is a masterwork of mural conception and design that figures historical and contemporary protagonists in the shaping of modern Malaysia.

The mural illuminates the enduring relationship between history and the vocation of art while presenting a contrasting narrative of the acknowledgement and affirmation of historical roles in the making of Malaysia's history.

Presented in a continuum of figures reaching into the year of pre-Independence, the mural explores the possibilities offered by art for the renewal of perceptions concerning history.

Sembang-sembang dalam bilik sejuk,
Duduk diatas kerusi yang empuk,
Cukup bulan gaji dicucuk,
Buat keputusan seperti orang mabuk...

selamat hari Merdeka ke 51 tahun

apparently, the merdeka commission was by a private entity, and not by petronas as many may have assumed... although it was quite misleading when you read the advert... anyhow, i guess that makes it ok... GP is just providing the venue...

i have come across a similar case for a memorial for martin luther king (MLK) worth USD80mil to be built by a non-american citizen..

"People may question whether it is a good idea to let an artist from China, whose human rights record often invites criticizes criticism from Americans, to carve out an image of Martin Luther King, Jr., the assassinated American civil rights icon. As a matter of fact, this political uncertainty weighs equally heavy, if not more, than artistic consideration."

with a strong response by american artists such as:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Luther_King,_Jr._National_Memorial#Sculptor_and_stone_choice

and all of the money are raised by private entity, including corporations...
